Ellen Lewis, PhD, is a global consultant based in Portugal and the United Kingdom, specializing in inclusive systemic thinking, organizational development, education, and evaluation. She is most active in global development and academic contexts, working with NGOs, higher education, public and private sectors, and communities. Her focus is on addressing complex problems through the lenses of gender equality, biodiversity, and inclusion. Co-author of the
‘Inclusive Systemic Evaluation’ (2018, UN Women) and
‘Inclusive Systemic Thinking (2024, Elgar Encyclopedia of Interdisciplinarity and Transdisciplinarity, Ch. 56). Ellen co-directs
Ethos of Engagement Consulting.
Central to Ellen’s work is her use of ‘Inclusive Systemic Thinking’ (IST), a flexible set of tools that examines the connections between Gender (non-binary), Environments (ecological and human-made), and Marginalized voices (human and non-human), known as the GEMs framework. This framework supports the exploration of complex issues, the structuring of problems, the evaluation of situations, and the shaping of policy, while also promoting inclusion, diversity, and awareness of power dynamics.
With a global reach, she teaches and consults in English and Spanish, emphasizing curriculum design and capacity/capability building. She currently consults and teaches systems thinking at the University of Exeter and is a visiting scholar at the University of Hull's Center for System Studies.
